Queueing

I found myself in a crowd
Of people waiting in a queue
There was a gate and one by one
They were called and they went through

I looked at all the people waiting
And it was plain to see
That they all were far more worthy
More worthy by half than me

I wondered how I could get through
I pondered how to get within
I thought they'd surely turn me back
And refuse to let me in

I fretted for an anxious moment
Then a plan occurred to me
Going to the tail of the queue
I stood there very quietly

I stood behind the last in line
As he stepped forward I did too
Till all but he had passed within
And the queue was just we two

One name was called but two slipped through
I hoped my saviour would not mind
As I hid in his shadow
And the gate clanged shut behind

The man called out "who touched my coat?"
One and all they turned to see
As I fell to my knees
With all eyes fixed upon me

His shadow overshadowing
Upon my head I felt his hand
Among the faithful gathering
He told me "rise my little lamb"

"Fear not, inherit what is yours
And all my father planned
For every lamb may pass within
While following the son of man"
